Support Mark & Na'Cole...

Hello!

We are Mark and Na'Cole Vanderwarf.

Thank you for stopping by our page to consider our situation.

As we’ve journeyed through the realization of Na’Cole’s disability, learning to manage her invisible and chronic illnesses, and reaching her physical limitations, we have come to a point where we find ourselves falling short and spreading ourselves thin. So, we are reaching out and asking for helping hands to come alongside us.

Mark is juggling work full time and all the household items, as well as caring for most, sometimes all, of Na’Cole’s daily needs. It would be an absolute blessing to Mark to have help with some household items from time to time and for someone to sit and aid Na’Cole when Mark is working, has a networking event, a meeting away from home, or serves at church on Sundays. Also long-term poor health circumstances can lead to isolation, so a visit with Na’Cole, as well as one with both Mark and Na’Cole from time to time, would also be a blessing!

We would greatly appreciate your helping hands. Please make yourself at home here and explore the site to learn more about how you can support your friends.

Thank you for your time and considerations!

September is Pain Awareness Month

September 30, 20246 min read

"Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart."

Hebrews 12:1-3

*The following is an old Facebook post of mine from September 2023

Did you know that September is Pain Awareness Month?

I've been thinking it about it for days and from being so tired, worn down, fully awake yet sleep deprived due to bearing constant high pain over the past few months, it has been difficult to move and think things through to tell you all about it with images or a reel. So maybe this late night write will work and hopefully make sense.

Friend, I could clinically describe what the pains are, and have done so before, but do you get a sense of how it affects me and my family - the nothing that can be done? Have you inferred the implications?

Chronic Pain is known as a dynamic disability and, for me, it's in addition to my physical impairments that also cause their own pain issues.

Pain. It dulls my mind; it's wears me down (especially lately dealing with the occipital neuralgia) both physically and emotionally. I cry, writhe, whimper, lose my breath, scream; I mourn. I'm fragile. I often feel like I'm barely hanging in there...

I'm thankful to not be scared of pain, just beaten up by it. Because of it, there are a lot of opportunities for Mark and I to exercise clinging to Jesus and resting in God. We're in the throws of it over here, yet finding His Joy together.

That's promised. Please let that sink in. Whatever your pain is, physical or other, His grace is sufficient. You can go to Him whilst in it. He will meet you in it and grow you through it. It is possible for your suffering to not be wasted.

"The Problem Of Pain - September 16, 2019:

Hi, I'm Joni Eareckson Tada with advice about dealing with pain.

So many people, yes, even Christians, struggle terribly with chronic pain. And at Joni and Friends, we hear from lots of them. I was looking through some of the emails, and it's clear that most Christians do not have a problem with God allowing pain; they've got a problem with feeling discouraged and even disappointed with the Lord because of their pain. My friend Roxanne is wrestling with that right now. She's a stalwart believer in Christ, but her pain has really been battering her faith.

But, like I told Roxanne, I said, "You know, Rox, the God of the Bible is not a celestial ogre who is out to make your life miserable. I mean, God is so interested in your earthly well-being and eternal welfare. Come on, you know He sent Jesus to deliver you and me from a misery far more devastating than any migraine or any degenerative disc disease."

God has made a huge personal investment in her personal condition, and mine. And He's heaven-bent on applying to Roxanne and me and you every benefit of His Son's resurrection, including peace that's profound, and joy overflowing, contentment that's sweet, and even a soul that's settled while in pain.

What's more, the Bible does not avoid the issue of pain. God's Word resonates with our pain and records our lament. In short, God understands. I mean, Psalm 22 says that God"... has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; He has not hidden His face from him but has listened to his cry for help." It's why the psalmist can say in Psalm 25, "Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely; l'm afflicted. Relieve the troubles of my heart and free me from my anguish." Oh, friend, when you're in pain, God hears you; God wants to free you - He can free you from your anguish. So, how do we approach the God of the Bible when in pain?

Well, this is what I do. When I am in really bad pain, I do not allow myself to think about it as the world thinks. The world says to curse God when you are in pain. Blame him. Fault him. Accuse him. Don't go there. Instead, ask the Lord to help you understand how your condition fits into His will for your life. Like Romans 12 says, do not be conformed to the pattern of this world; do not think like the world; be transformed, finding out how good God's will really is. And how you are to trust Him in your pain. Next, we all know that Jesus is well acquainted with pain, so ask your bleeding Savior to teach you His hard path and to help you to follow Him as you should. The Bible says that Christ has suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in His steps. So, if you're in pain, ask the One that knows all about it. Ask the Lord to help you follow him, trust Him, and how to lean on Him for His grace and His enabling. So that you can have contentment that's sweet and a soul that's settled.

These are just a few of the things I shared with Roxanne. And I share these ideas with you today, because when you're in pain, I don't want you to look at it as the world would have you look at it.

God's not an ogre; don't be thinking He's a killjoy; He's not out to make your life miserable; do not be thinking that way. Think about your pain the same way as God thinks about it. And if you need help doing it, then please let me give you my pamphlet "Pain and Providence." (link below) And remember, Jesus has left you a good example of how to bear up under your pain. He bore His. You can bear yours in His grace."

Our Journey

We've been married since January 2011 and knew there was something not quite right with Na'Cole's health in 2012. Unfortunately, in 2013, we realized that we had to start advocating for her health to figure out the root cause of her increasingly concerning flareups and source of constant pain when she had to start scaling back in work, serving her church in many capacities, and from social activities. It's been a long, nonlinear road to answers, with hopes of recovery, all to uncover her genetic disorder, which led to additional subsequent chronic illnesses.

In 2017, we finally found out that Na'Cole was born with a rare genetic disorder called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, affecting her body systemically. Her condition is progressively degenerative and has caused additional and related disorders.

In October 2022, Na’Cole was diagnosed with a related autonomic nervous system dysfunction called POTS and began treatments for the major flareup. After further testing, in January 2023 her doctors confirmed that she is also dealing with a reactive Mast Cell situation and began treatment for MCAS.

There are no cures.

Since Christmas 2022, Na’Cole has been learning to manage these new chronic disorders, applying what to do at home and best physiotherapy practices. She graduated from Cardiac Rehab for POTS in March 2023 and continues to strive to maintain her progress, working out on physical therapy equipment while being surrounded by healthcare professionals. However, she struggles with exercise intolerance and continues to deal with fainting and pre-fainting symptoms in addition to her daily struggles with EDS, chronic pain, and fibromyalgia. Though some symptoms currently can be more predictable, all of this greatly limits Na’Cole, continuing to leave her homebound and often bedridden.

Therefore, any and all the extra help, prayers, and visits would be amazing.

Thank you for reading our journey, thus far.

God bless!
